Radiation Survey

Radiation is all around us. Naturally-Occurring radiation is present in the environment, and we are all exposed to it.

There are three primary sources of radiation. They are:

  1. Terrestrial radiation from soil and soil gases;

  2. Cosmic radiation from the sun and outer space;

  3. Internal radiation due to natural-occuring radiation in the body.

At issue lately is whether some granite countertops emit dangerous levels of radon test radiation, especially radon gas, which is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Some granite countertop colors are more potentially troublesome than others: I am seeing higher results in the lighter colors that contain reds, rust, pinks, purples; however, to be sure you've got to test them all.

Experts agree that most granite countertops emit some radon and even other types of radiation. The question is whether they do so at levels that can impact cancer risk.  See level reading at right--note how much higher than the outside air level of 38-42 counts per minute.
